When I finished reading Onyx Storm, the latest books in the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros, I felt like I needed to detox from the romantasy genre especially since the fourth book in that series won’t be out for quite a while :( So I went to my large TBR cabinet to choose from there because I knew there was no romantasy novels in there to tempt me to stay in that world.
I pulled Sometimes I Lie by Alice Fenney out of the cabinet. Wow - highly recommend! This book has been out for a while - 2018 - and was Alice Fenney’s debut novel. She has gone on to write other novels that I have (over the years before even reading this one) put on my TBR Goodreads list. I think I found myself a new author.
Interestingly I became aware of something about myself at the end of this story. I had made assumptions about characters almost all the way through the story.
Once the author shows the twist, I paused, went back to re-read parts under my new understanding. Now, I know author’s rely on readers to make these assumptions. They depend on readers to do this in order to develop suspense and tension, get readers engaged and make the emotional impact that much more. I just never caught myself being caught in that assumption if that makes sense.
On a side note, I bought this book review post-it notepad from meaggiemoos.com and I’ve started using it as a way to create quick and succinct reviews of the novels I’m reading. You can follow her on Instagram at @meggiemoos (this is how I originally found her).
Let me know what you think about this.
